How to sign up to ride as a group
Although we have tried to make the process as simple and as easy as possible for both the riders and the event staff, there still seems to be some confusion concerning just how to sign up to ride with a friend or group. Print these two pages for reference.
The Concept:
John Smith, his son Paul Smith and friend Bill Brown want to ride the event together on Saturday.
John saying he wants to ride with Bill, Bill saying he wants to ride with Paul and Paul saying he wants to ride with John can get confusing and makes it difficult for the staff to group rider assignments.
Now lets say the three riders choose John to act as the group leader. John declares he is now a Captain. Paul and Bill (and Tom, Dick and Harry for that matter) can now individually each say they want to ride with Captain John.
Keeping track of the grouping keys off of each rider's ID number. This number is automatically generated when a rider submits their main entry application.
The Process:
- Each rider in the group must first complete and submit their main, pre-entry application. By doing this, a unique ID number is generated for each rider. This ID number will be used throughout this process to identify you and the others in your group when rider assignments are determined.
- Each group, even if it is just two people riding together, must decide on one member of the group to act as the Captain.
- The Captain, using his name and zip code, retrieves his ID number using the provided ID retrieval form.
- The Captain, now armed with his ID number, signs up as a Captain using the provided registration form. (example below).
- Captains: Select "YES" when asked if you are a Captain.
- Only enter your ID number in the "Captains ID" box and your name and day. Leave the "Group Rider ID" box blank.
- Before other riders can register to ride with a Captain, they must know their Captain's ID number. You can get this directly from your Captain or use the provided ID retrieval form. The name and zip code of the Captain is required to retrieve his/her ID number. Write down the Captain ID number.
- You can also see a list of registered Captains here.
- Each "group" rider must then use the same ID retrieval form as above to retrieve his/her own ID number. Write it down.
- The others in the group, now armed with their own ID numbers and the Captain's ID number, sign up using the same registration form (example below).
- Group Riders: select "NO" when asked if you are a Captain.
- Enter the group's Captain's ID number in the "Captain's ID" box.
- Enter your own ID number in the "Group Rider" box.
Example Registration Form:
- John Smith signed up to ride the event on Saturday and has retrieved his ID number of 123. John is registering as a captain.
- Paul Smith also signed up and retrieved his ID number of 124. He is registering as a group rider, riding Saturday, with Captain #123.
